Eyeball Chambers is the second-eldest of the Chambers brothers, following Frank, who ran away at seventeen, joined the Navy, and ended up serving a long prison term in Portsmouth for rape and criminal assault. Eyeball himself dropped out of high school in the tenth grade and chummed around with Charlie Hogan, Billy Tessio, and their juvenile delinquent buddies. His nickname derives from his right eye, which is "all funny and jittery," a physical marker that sets him apart and reinforces his status as a town character. He is part of the same family that the town has already written off: Chris, his younger brother, is expected to follow the same path into delinquency and failure.
Role in the Confrontation over Ray Brower
Eyeball appears alongside Ace Merrill when the two groups converge on the boggy patch where Ray Brower's body lies. He is wearing a red nylon high school jacket, the kind given to varsity sports players, and his ducktail haircut is plastered back by the rain. Upon seeing Chris among the younger boys, he exclaims, "Sumbitch! That's my little brother!"—a remark that mixes surprise with a proprietary, almost mocking recognition. When Chris tells him to back off, Eyeball responds with a threat: "You little prick! You're gonna wind up in traction for this!" He later starts forward in rage when Chris insults him, only to be stopped when Chris fires a bullet into the water ten feet in front of him. Eyeball jumps back, cursing, but does not press the attack.
Violence Against Chris and Aftermath
Eyeball's role in the story culminates in the violence that follows the failed attempt to claim the body. While Gordon Lachance is beaten by Ace Merrill and Fuzzy Bracowicz, Chris suffers even worse at Eyeball's hands: Eyeball breaks Chris's arm in two places and leaves his face "looking like a Canadian sunrise." The elbow break requires a steel pin to set. Chris, bleeding from both ears, staggers along the soft shoulder reading a Richie Rich comic book until a neighbor, Mrs. McGinn, takes him to the Central Maine General Emergency Room. There, Chris lies, saying he fell down the cellar stairs in the dark. The doctor is disgusted but does not press further. Chris later uses a pay phone to call Mrs. McGinn collect, asking her to tell his mother to remove the lightbulb from the cellar socket—an implicit threat that if the cellar is dark, no one can prove Eyeball was responsible. Constable Bannerman does come to the Chambers house, but Eyeball does not go to jail.
